  • Project summary:
This grant comprises a set of four studies (one meta-analysis and three experimental studies) meant to empirically validate an intervention based on automatic processes, as an appropriate treatment for altering particular behaviors, as well as to identify specific implicit and explicit cognitions which can act as mechanisms of change. The first study will use meta-analytic techniques to examine the efficacy of various kinds of interventions based on automatic processes (i.e. attentional retraining, evaluative conditioning etc.) to alter implicit cognitions and behaviors. The second study consists in a series of laboratory experiments designed to calibrate two particular interventions, which can alter two specific sets of implicit cognitions: one being related to smoking behavior, the other one being related to job-seeking self-efficacy. The third study is a randomized clinical trial designed to examine the efficacy of an automatic-based intervention in reducing cigarette use and in altering implicit cognitions towards smoking. Finally, in the fourth study a second randomized clinical trial will be conducted in order to establish the efficacy of an automatic-based intervention in increasing job-seeking behaviors, as well as the level of implicit job-searching self-efficacy. The results from these four studies will demonstrate whether such interventions, based on manipulating implicit processes, can be considered as evidence-based treatments.

Project's objectives

  • O1. Using a meta-analytic approach to examine the efficacy of the automatic processes derived interventions in the field of health and clinical psychology.
Main activities: Documenting, defining inclusion criteria for meta-analysis, gathering data, analyzing data, writing report & dissemination.
  • O2. Running a series of laboratory experiments to validate an intervention based on implicit measures which can alter implicit cognitions related to smoking, respectively to job-seeking self-efficacy.
Main activities: Initial study: logistics activities & recruiting participants, running the experiment, analyzing data. Subsequent studies: replication of findings in order to calibrate the EC intervention.
  • O3. Implementing a randomized clinical trial that aims to establish the efficacy of the previously validated intervention (in the lab context) in changing implicit cognitions on the long term, and thus indirectly affecting smoking behavior of persons with moderate and severe tobacco addiction.
Main activities: Documenting, logistic activities & recruiting participants, baseline assessment, random assignment of participants, implementing the intervention, interim and post-treatment assessment, follow-up assessment.
  • O4. Implementing a randomized clinical trial that focuses on the efficacy of the previously validated intervention (in the lab context) in changing implicit job-seeking self-efficacy on the long term, and thus indirectly affecting the job-seeking behavior of senior undergraduate students.
Main activities: Documenting, logistic activities & recruiting participants, baseline assessment, random assignment of participants, implementing the intervention, interim and post-treatment assessment, follow-up assessment.
